Claressa Shields: MMA Treats Women Better Than Boxing Does

Claressa Shields: MMA Treats Women Better Than Boxing Does”

Shields, a two-division undisputed world champion in boxing, has signed an exclusive, multi-year deal with MMA promotion PFL.

A two-time Olympic gold medalist in boxing, Shields, 25, will not compete in PFL's traditional "season format" in 2021, but intends to target a season berth in 2022, the sources confirmed.

For the biggest name in woman's boxing to join MMA shows, there aren't really many attractive fights for her in boxing.

Claressa Shields rose to prominence following back-to-back gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics for Team USA. After accumulating a 77-1 amateur record, Shields became a professional and has since put together a flawless 10-0 record that has seen her win all four major titles in the same weight class, a distinction that has been accomplished by only 8 other boxers (male or female) in history. "I'm gonna fight those girls, I'm gonna beat them, but I plan on having maybe two or three boxing matches and two to three MMA fights next year".

Shields is the consensus number one female pound-for-pound boxer in the world today, and has long expressed her intentions to compete in the sport of mixed martial arts as well, with aspirations of becoming the greatest two-sport athlete of all time and simultaneously holding world championships in boxing and MMA.

MMA Junkie was first to report the signing. That's what I want to test myself. "I'm not initially thinking of Kayla Harrison right off the bat, but she will be in my thoughts towards the end of 2021". "I thought as soon as she grabbed my leg I would get frustrated and would try to bite her or something, but that hasn't happened".

"I was telling MMA fans, I'm not just a talker", Shields said. "I know that's what they are used to, all these clout chasers out there". She said on this matter, "I'm really taking this seriously".

Shields, from Flint, Michigan, hasn't settled on a training regimen or a home MMA gym, but she wants "to train with some of the best MMA fighters and coaches (to) speed up my process", she said. I had 77 wins as an amatuer, one loss. I haven't lost a fight since I was 17 years old, and I'm 25. I'm 10-0 as a pro.

"I didn't come to MMA to lose".

"I'm not upset with boxing, but boxing has always been a sexist sport", Shields said. The 2021 season is tentatively set to begin in April if it can be fully compliant with the protocol at the time, and looks likely to take place in Las Vegas.
