What the US Military Does on Guam and Why North Korea Cares”

"If North Korea ignores our warning and carries out this provocation, it will face strong and firm punishment from our military and the South Korea-U.S. alliance".

Threatened by North Korea earlier this week, the newly released fact sheet titled "Preparing for an Imminent Missile Threat" stirred the worst memories in WWII survivors who still live on the 50km-long island that serves as a key regional asset for the Pentagon.

According to Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (MDAA), a non-profit organization dedicated to generate public support for missile defense systems in the United State, Guam is covered by a USA missile defense system deployed permanently by the Defense Department at Andersen Air Force Base, which includes the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and the AN/TPY-2 radar system.

Trump declined to say whether the U.S.is considering a pre-emptive military strike as he spoke to reporters Thursday before a briefing with his top national security advisers at his New Jersey golf resort.

In August past year, the North's Foreign Ministry warned that all US military bases in the Pacific including Guam would "face ruin in the face of all-out and substantial attack" by the North's military.

The latest war of words between Trump and the North - ruled by young leader Kim Jong-un - unnerved many in the South, even though it has become largely used to hostile rhetoric from its neighbour.

No one really knows how close or how far we are from a possible nuclear conflict with North Korea.

However President Moon did not make any public comments on this matter and he did not attend the Thursday meeting of his National Security Council (NSC) that a presidential spokesman clarified was not an emergency session, but a "regular weekly meeting" presided over by NSC Director Chung Eui Yong.

President Donald Trump's aggreissive stance on North Korea is increasing the chance of war, experts say. But his ability to offer economic incentives like reopening the Kaesong Industrial Complex have been impeded by global sanctions, and his calls for dialogue with Pyongyang have been rejected.

Replicas of North and South Korean missiles are pictured at the Korean War Memorial in Seoul on August 10, 2017.

The Moon administration has moved to embrace the USA emphasis on increased sanctions and military deterrence. USA allies Japan and South Korea quickly vowed a strong reaction if the North were to follow through.

Tourism-dependent Guam is looking to cash in on its new-found fame as a North Korean missile target, tapping an unlikely promotional opportunity to attract visitors to the idyllic island and prove that all publicity is good publicity. South Korean shares ended at an 11-week nadir today as anxious offshore investors sold stocks following President Donald Trump's fresh warning that North Korea not strike Guam or U.S. allies.

The exercises were scheduled well before tensions began to rise over Trump's increasingly fiery rhetoric and North Korea's announcement of the missile plan, which if carried out would be its most provocative launch yet.

"They believe that we are not true USA citizens, when we do have plenty of Chamorro people going into the USA military and serving for their country and dying for their country", he said.

"Everyone is going about doing the same routine, but everyone is talking about the threat", Josie Sokala, who lives in the village of Mangilao on the eastern shore of Guam, said in a message. But experts say the Japanese military does not now have the capability to shoot down a missile in high altitude.
