Trump meets Japan, Australia leaders over trade, N. Korea threat”

North Korea's Foreign Ministry on Saturday issued its first official statement on President Donald Trump's trip to Asia, slamming Trump for trying to denuclearize the North.

Trump and other world leaders are in the Philippine capital of Manila to attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

Due to arrive in Washington late Tuesday night, the president said he will make major announcements on trade and North Korea on Wednesday at the White House.

Earlier Monday, the US leader met with Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte, who hosted the ASEAN summit.

A Philippine official who was present at Trump's meeting with ASEAN heads of state revealed in a press briefing that "there was no comment forthcoming from the US president" on North Korea, adding that he felt it was "very apparent" that the USA was emphasizing trade.

The president spoke to reporters along with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe after the three men sat down for a trilateral meeting. About 3,500 protesters tried to march on the U.S. Embassy and were stopped by riot police.

Protesters burned an effigy of Trump on Monday. "I am encouraged that Vietnam has recently become the fastest growing export market to the United States".

Quang called his meeting with Trump as "A milestone in Vietnam-U.S. relations, creating strong momentum for the substantive, effective, and stable development of the bilateral, comprehensive partnership".

"South Koreans were pleasantly surprised and felt suddenly reassured as they found in his words a new kind of Donald Trump who seems to actually understand the history, the countries and the people involved regarding the current North Korea crisis", Mr. Kim told The Washington Times.

And while there is no denying that Washington still considers the issue as important - North Korea was always high on the agenda during Trump's two-week Asian visit - the US leader's devotion to trade in Manila is proving to be a squandered chance for the region in restating its commitment to dealing with the Kim regime. How do you feel about Trump visiting the region?

During his bilateral meeting with Quang, Trump also offered his services as a mediator for the South China Sea dispute.

Trump's speech in the Vietnamese city of Danang on Friday read as if lifted from one of the rallies he stages in the United States.

"It's disgraceful", he said. "But I only want to emphasize that our meetings for the next two days present an excellent opportunity for us to engage in meaningful discussions on matters of regional and worldwide importance".

Prior to the speech, Mr. Kim said, "the biggest fear in Seoul has been the possibility of the US bypassing South Korea, striking Pyongyang and thus inviting massive retaliation from the North".

Presidential trips overseas are often more about pageantry and rhetoric than substantive policymaking, but as President Trump's long tour of Asia ends, it's looking particularly lightweight.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told the summit in Vietnam that Asia-Pacific nations must "uphold multilateralism", countering Trump's message that the USA would stay out of trade deals that surrender its sovereignty.

On the sidelines of the Vietnam meeting, 11 countries kept alive a Trans Pacific trade deal whose future was thrown into doubt when Trump withdrew from it in the name of protecting American jobs.

"Presidency by misadventure", Mr. Schumer said on Twitter. Trump said we will no longer sign deals that "Tie our hands, surrender our sovereignty, and make meaningful enforcement practically impossible".

Mr. Trump said the pomp and pageantry of his Chinese welcome was a proper tribute for him and for the U.S.

But Xi's government has repeatedly rejected the idea that it can or would deliver Kim.

China was left out of the TPP, which had been led by the United States and Japan, and was meant in part as a bulwark against China's strategic ambitions.
