Student Died After Eating Pasta That Was 5 Days Old

An autopsy later revealed that he'd died suddenly from food poisoning caused by a bacteria called bacillus cereus.

According to the journal, he left the pasta unrefrigerated for five days and warmed it in the microwave.

Another added: "I don't know why anyone would leave perishable food in the kitchen for 5 days and think it's okay to still eat it".

AJ vomited for several hours and went to bed at around midnight to try and sleep it off but was found dead by his parents 11 hours later when he failed to turn up for college in Brussels, Belgium.

Over the next few hours, AJ started throwing up, but believing it was just a case of food poisoning he drank lots of water, had some medicine and went to bed.

Dr Bernard, a licensed practitioner, said cases like this aren't very common though they have been written about in the past, with patients dying "within hours" of presenting with the symptoms.

Bacillus cereus is a bacteria commonly found in soil that produces toxins, causing vomiting and diarrhoea.

"Although we can not incriminate B cereus as the direct and unique cause of death, the present case illustrates the severity of the emetic and diarrhoeal syndromes and the importance of adequate refrigeration of prepared food", he said.

Take a look at the video made by Dr Bernard explaining what must have gone down in AJ's case.

However, when the food was tested by the National Refereance Laboratory for Food-borne Outbreaks, it was found that it was so poisonous it caused his liver to fail.

This is important because sometimes food can be tainted without smelling or looking spoiled.

I come from a big family so when I cook I tend to go a bit overboard with the quantity so there's nearly always extra food that can't be finished in one sitting.

The pasta was left out on the side for two days before it was put in the fridge.

Even though AJ was right in that he did get food poisoning, his case was much more serious than most. It has been viewed more than 1.9 million times.

'That was kinda dumb but not really something you expect to kill you a day later, ' one person wrote. said that Bacillus cereus can contaminate a wide range of foods, "particularly rice and leftovers, as well as sauces, soups, and other prepared foods that have sat out too long at room temperature".
