Google Unveils Enterprise Version Of Google Glass
Ref. NG/E269On July 18, 2017, Google announced the wider availability of Google Glass Enterprise Edition, opening up access to the wearable computer through its network of solution partners. The announcement followed a two-year trial program. According to reports at the time, the device was already in use by more than 50 businesses in the United States, including Boeing, Volkswagen, DHL, AGCO, Dignity Health, NSF International, and Sutter Health.
The Enterprise Edition is a lightweight wearable computer featuring a transparent display designed to bring information directly into the wearer’s line of sight. While conceptually identical to the original consumer and Explorer versions, which launched at a price of $1,500, the enterprise model features design and hardware adjustments intended to improve comfort during long-term wear. Upgrades include an improved processor, longer battery life, faster Wi-Fi speeds, a video recording indicator, and an updated camera module that increases resolution from five megapixels to eight megapixels.
Participating companies reported notable efficiency gains during the trial phase. According to Google, AGCO reduced its production times by 25 percent, while DHL improved its supply chain efficiency by 15 percent. Additionally, an accompanying application called Augmedix was utilized by doctors to transcribe notes during patient interactions.
Although many organizations continued to use the technology on a trial basis, the Glass product team returned to the X division to collaborate with the Google Cloud team and external partners on future business applications.
