Trump appoints Gov. Brownback as religious freedom ambassador”

Brownback will oversee a staff of about 25 as the head of an office responsible for publishing an annual report on religious freedom in virtually every country in the world, along with a list of the countries that are the world's worst abusers. "I am honoured to serve such an important cause", Brownback wrote on Twitter. Under the new law, Brownback said religious student groups could "establish religious beliefs as qualification for membership".

He says Brownback has accepted the nomination from the president, and is excited to get on to the next step in the process.

Brownback would likely delay his resignation until confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the post within the U.S. Department of State.

"I think he would be more open to work with the Kansas legislature than Governor Brownback who was in his final term". "I wish he and Mary all the best in this new chapter of their public service". The move comes after a tumultuous year for Brownback's legislative agenda, and an adversarial relationship with many Kansas legislators.

The Office of International Religious Freedom has the mission of promoting religious freedom as a core objective of US foreign policy.

Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, M.D. would serve the remainder of Brownback's term, which expires in January, 2019.

"Religious freedom is the first freedom".

Rodriguez added: 'By appointing a sitting governor, this administration has elevated the importance of the position within the Department of State and has sent a powerful signal to the world that the United States is serious about preserving and defending the religious liberties of all believers.

Kelly Arnold, the chairman of the Kansas Republican Party, cited the governor's work enacting abortion restrictions and advancing gun rights, saying, "I believe history will judge Governor Brownback favorably".

"He has caused enough damage here in Kansas", Witt said in a statement.

But Brownback will be most remembered for championing cuts in Kansas personal income taxes starting in 2012.

Brownback has scheduled a news conference Thursday afternoon to discuss plans for his expected departure from the governor's office. "He is moving on not because of anything he accomplished in Kansas but because of who he knows in Washington". "Lt. Governor Colyer has been an active and willing participant in the disastrous policies of Sam Brownback".

Brownback grew up on a family farm in eastern Kansas, trained as a lawyer and was the state's agriculture secretary from 1986 to 1993, taking a year off to serve as a White House fellow.
