Back to School for Drivers and Pedestrians

Back to School for Drivers and Pedestrians”

The Dubuque School District is advertising for bus drivers with yard signs.

Kate Ott, Deputy Health Director for Ontario County wants to remind motorists how important it is to stop for school buses who are stopped with their lights on.

Each year, about 20 American children are killed while getting on or off a school bus.

Assemblywoman Jenne said the governor's office has reported it is estimated that 10 million drivers pass school buses nationally every year. And they're excited to see their friends. Ten feet in front of and behind the bus are considered danger zones by the Iowa Department of Transportation. Earlier today, it was brought to our attention that one of our bus drivers may have been speeding and texting while operating a district bus. Be aware of your surroundings and always come to a complete stop. The driver must yield to the pedestrian when the pedestrian is in the same lane as the vehicle or a lane adjacent to the lane the vehicle is in. He says Iowa schools are doing all they can to get out the word.

"The drivers are seeing motorists run their stop paddles on a daily basis".

"We've had a couple of instances where there were younger drivers", Knowles said, "like probably still in high school".

This year, Minnesota has increased the penalty for misdemeanor stop arm violations from $300 to $500. Across the state of MI, 15 children between the ages of 5-18 died past year while walking near a road.

"They don't use their turn signals", Alicia Desborough said. Mark Thomas of the Marysville Police Department.

Convictions for unlawfully passing a school bus while it's stopped to get or let off passengers also results in five points on ones license.

The Marysville Police Department reviewed 49 videos in May and 14 in June, and ended up sending out 60 total tickets past year. The state of Hawaii had to consolidate and eliminate some of its bus routes due to a lack of drivers, as did a school district in Oklahoma.

She also reminds us that phones and other distractions have no place in the driver's seat.

"It is clear this is a major issue in the North Country with reports of more and more distracted drivers on our streets and highways", Assemblywoman Jenne said.

"Substitute drivers generally drive a little slower because they are trying to find addresses for students they're picking up", said Tobler.

She pointed out Potsdam Central school bus drivers had noted the cameras were necessary because they often found it hard to get the license plate numbers of vehicles that were illegally passing their buses.
