Coronavirus: Bronx Zoo tiger tests positive for COVID-19”

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, the Wildlife Conservation Society said in a statement Sunday.

While other tigers and lions were also exhibiting symptoms, the zoo made a decision to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and had started to lose her appetite, and they did not want to subject all the cats to anaesthesia, Calle said.

"All of these large cats are expected to recover".

The zoo tested the animals out of "an abundance of caution", with the tiger's positive COVID-19 result confirmed by the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) National Veterinary Services Laboratory.

Nadia is said to be well, though his appetite has decreased.

"Our cats were infected by a person caring for them who was asymptomatically infected with the virus or before that person developed symptoms".

Bronx zoo officials are, however positive that the cats will recover. It will closely observe the animals with the intention of sharing any discoveries in this regard, as the world grapples with the many unknowns of the novel coronavirus. Karen Terio, head of the Zoological Pathology Program at the University of IL veterinary school (where tests for the Bronx Zoo tiger were conducted) told the New York Times: "Given the number of people in this country that have been infected with the virus and have become ill, and the number of people in this country that own domestic cats, it seems fairly improbable that cats are an important source of the virus for people if the first case we're diagnosing it in is a tiger".

"Right now, there's been a lot of research done and a lot of testing done on domestic animals, cats and dogs".
